Falmer Thermal Spray: A Single Solution for Manufacturers' Challenges

Article Image

In 1961, Newton Meyers was a young Harvard graduate who saw the future: thermal spraying. 50 years later, his vision, along with ingenuity, hard work, and dedication, has produced a thermal spray coating company that remains the leader at solving manufacturers' quality, protection and lifecycle problems.

What is thermal spraying?

Thermal spraying is a process that uses specially-designed equipment and techniques to turn metallic or nonmetallic materials into a molten state that can be applied as a coating to virtually any surface. Thermal Spraying uses high-temperature plasma jets that melt the coating materials to temperatures sometimes in excess of 30,000 degrees.

Falmer Thermal Spraying: A long history of leadership

Growing up in Providence, Rhode Island, Meyers was intrigued by the cost of parts and replacement materials in the wire and cable industry due to wear. He saw an opportunity to use the innovative science of thermal spraying to reduce the downtime associated with replacement parts, sheaves capstans and rollers on wire and cable equipment. With that vision, he started Falmer Thermal Spray in the basement of his home. The company quickly became a pioneer, using material coatings to make parts less expensive to manufacture, perform better, last longer, and, ultimately, improve clients' bottom lines.

Falmer Thermal Spray looks to the future

Today, Newton's daughter, Stacy M. Ames, oversees Falmer Thermal Spray. The company has steadily increased its revenues at a rate of 5 percent to 10 percent each year. While the company has grown and prospered, it has stayed true to its commitment of helping its customers by making machine components that wear longer and cost less to manufacture. "We are much more than just a job shop. We find complete solutions to our customers' materials problems," she says. To that end, the firm has a strategic partnership with a grinding company, which allows Falmer to provide a more efficient solution to even the most complex problems.

The company recently completed a move to a larger facility in the North Shore's research and development hub. The new facility boasts five full-time, experienced employees (photo of building) and clean, modern equipment including a state-of-the-art dust collection system. With an experienced team and the most advanced equipment, Falmer offers its customers a proven record of accuracy and quality, on-time deliveries and quick turnarounds.

At Falmer, the entire organization is focused on "How can we do this better?" This family-run business has the experience and commitment to provide solutions that are more innovative and affordable than its competition.

With the support of Salem Five's banking services and a new equipment line of credit, Stacy Ames is excited about the future of her company. "To grow my business, I need to focus on my customer service, recruit the most talented employees, and continually reinvest in new equipment that improves the quality of our coatings and adds more automation to our processes," she says. "Not only has Salem Five helped me improve the quality of our insurance, I no longer need to worry about the banking side of my business. I can concentrate on my customers and their ever-evolving challenges."

Family-owned and woman-run, Falmer Thermal Spray has been providing manufacturers with protection and performance-enhancing coatings for more than 50 years. A pioneer in the thermal coatings industry, Falmer Thermal Spray offers its customers a wide range of grinding and coating solutions to solve even their toughest materials problems. Located on the North Shore of Massachusetts in an R&D hot zone, Falmer provides its customers with the highest quality coatings, quickly and at an affordable price.
